In 2013, the independent opera company, Skull of Yorick Productions, found by Philip Modinos and Kassandra Dimopoulou, moved their base from London (UK), to Thessaloniki (GR) in order to create a whole new dynamic around Independent Opera Productions in Greece and to fill the gap of operatic activity in Thessaloniki.
Since then, the team has successfully created:
- The first operatic festival in Greece, the "Greek Opera Festival", which takes place since 2015 at the Odeon of the Ancient Roman Forum of Thessaloniki.
- The independent Opera Studio Skull of Yorick Productions" which was created in order to put young opera singers on stage.
- The project "Opera da Camera Oscura" which helps aspiring opera artists to make important role debuts.
The team has put on stage numerous professional operatic performances, gaining the public's appreciation.
After only 4 years, Thessaloniki has became a vibrant operatic nest which attracts creative and talented artists from around the world.
Hellenic Opera Corporation was founded in 2016 by one of the co-founders of Skull of Yorick Productions,
Philip Modinos and Kassandra Dimopoulou
HOC is proud to have the support of acclaimed artists around the world, such as:
- The great operatic star Placido Domingo (scroll down for the video).
- The former Artistic Director of the Royal Opera House London, Kasper Holten.
- The Greek soprano Jenny Drivala, famous for her remarkable international career, who has been supporting the team since the beginning.
HOC collaborates with main cultural institutions such as:
- Thessaloniki Concert Hall
- Ephorate of Antiquities of Thessaloniki
- Region of Central Macedonia
- National Theatre Northern Greece
- Municipality of Thessaloniki
- Municipality of Larisa
and many others.
In less than 4 years, the team has managed to put on stage more than 10 operas - all new productions- several Opera Studios and has performed more than 100 performances all over Greece. Thessaloniki, a city that has no opera house and a very low opera activity, is becoming now a new operatic field that helps many artists to make their steps on stage.
Every year, around 10.000 people attend our performances and the number
is increasing rapidly. Despite the financial crisis of Greece and any difficulties that are coming out of that, the people who are working in HOC are determined to stand their ground and continue the cultural empowerment.
